Life isn’t meant to be lived perfectly…but merely to be LIVED. Boldly, wildly, beautifully, uncertainly, imperfectly, magically LIVED.
– Mandy Hale
In life it is so easy to strive for perfection, but that perfect moment is rarely there. Instead, it is a moving target. There will always be something else to improve or change. The bad thing about perfectionism is that it might stop you from actually seeing the beauty that is right front of you. It might stop you from doing the things you’d really want, like taking your family photos.
I need to wait for the ‘perfect’ time
You might feel like you’re not ready for a photo session. That you need to wait for a perfect time, and tick certain boxes first:
- Flawless Looks: ‘I need to lose some weight, bought new clothes, or had my hair cut’
- Pristine Home: ‘The walls need to be re-painted first, there is less clutter, or we live somewhere bigger’.
- Ideal Family: ‘We are less busy, my daughter’s eczema has cleared or my child’s less angry’.
I have to actively remind myself that this messy chaos is my life. And I do not always see the beauty in it, but I know it is right there! Right in the way my littlest love pulls my hair (painfully!), or how my 7-year-old can laugh until his tummy hurts. How my home is messy but with a lot of stuff that holds a lot of meaning to me. And I know that I want to look back at what my life was like. To feel it again when I see my photos. To know that it was not Instagram-perfection, but magical and beautiful all the same.
The perfect time for family photos is always NOW
Beauty does not come from smooth skin, a polished home or faces with pasted on smiles. Instead beauty is found in real emotions, lived-in homes and relationships that show what makes your family unique.
Don’t let the pursuit of perfection deprive you of creating photos with your family. None of these superficial elements truly matter in 17 years time, when you look back at these images. Embrace your imperfect beautiful life now, because these moments will be your most cherished memories.
