Have you ever wondered how to capture the essence of a life’s journey in a way that feels authentic and timeless? To have a record of someone’s voice, their laugh, their expressions and mannerisms? That’s where Life Story Films come in. They are heartfelt, personal documentaries that preserve a chapter of life, offering a glimpse into the world of a loved one. Whether it’s sharing pieces of their past, a film about what they value, or wisdom they want to share, these documentaries serve as cherished keepsakes that last for generations. They are intimate, relational portraits that capture someone honestly — in their own home, their garden, or somewhere that’s meaningful to their story.
It allows future generations to sit beside someone they may never have met and feel like they have.

What Is a Life Story Film?
A Life Story Film is a 10–15 minute personal documentary film that preserves a part of someone’s story. It’s often best to focus on just an aspect and make a more detailed, small film about that topic.
The focus can be on:
- A love story
- Childhood memories
- Wisdom someone wants to leave for their children
- Reflections after a major life event or diagnosis
- A milestone birthday celebration
Every story is different because every person is.
A Personal Story: Filming My Own Grandmother
I created a personal short documentary that holds a lot of meaning to me. I documented my grandmother and the way the relationship with my grandfather started. She reads the love letters they exchanged for 3.5 years during their long-distance relationship. She was in the Netherlands, and he worked in Venezuela. It’s very romantic and highlights the incredible potential these films have in leaving a legacy of memories and emotions that resonate across time.
I also love that it’s filmed in her home, a place I knew so well. It’s really powerful to see those places come back, many years after she has passed away. And the use of old family photos is a great way to illustrate her life, and for these to be preserved in that way.
Now, when my children watch the film, they don’t just hear about her. They can really feel what she was like and learn a bit about their family’s origins and history.

When Is a Life Story Film Especially Meaningful?
There is no single “right time.” But families across London and the UK often choose to create Life Story Films in moments like these:
As a Gift for Elderly Parents or Grandparents
If you’re searching for a truly meaningful gift for elderly parents, this goes far beyond flowers or framed photographs. It says: “You matter. Your story matters. We want to keep it.” Adult children can commission these films for a 70th, 80th or 90th birthday or simply because they don’t want to wait.
After a Terminal Diagnosis
For families navigating terminal illness, especially those with young children, a Life Story Film can become an extraordinary act of love. The film is a way to show them how much you love them and send them a message, a way for children to know their parent’s voice and a space to share stories, humour and tenderness, to show more of their own personality and life. These do not need to be heavy; they can be light, joyful, and intimate.
To Preserve Family Legacy
Family stories disappear quietly. Migration journeys. How two people met. Childhood memories of wartime. The resilience that shaped a generation. A Personal Documentary Film preserves these histories gently and respectfully, helping keep the family legacy alive for decades to come.

What the Process Looks Like
Creating a Life Story Film is about connection, not performance.
We begin with a relaxed conversation and a thoughtful questionnaire to explore which stories feel most meaningful to document.
Filming typically unfolds over two days:
- Day one: a conversational interview and starting to take some cutaways
- Day two: everyday moments at home, in the garden, with family, at a celebration, or in places connected to the story or locations that hold a special meaning to the person.
The final film:
- 10–15 minutes long
- It will include royalty-free music
- Delivered digitally
- Optional USB presentation if commissioned as a gift
From filming to delivery, the process takes approximately 8 weeks. If you are planning for a milestone birthday or special occasion, it’s best to book at least two months in advance.

Why Work With a Documentary Filmmaker?
There is a difference between a recorded interview and a documentary. With over 15 years working in documentary filmmaking, I am trained to:
- Gently draw out stories without pressure
- Hold space for silence, tears and laughter
- See people as they truly are
- Shape a narrative that feels natural and timeless
This is not about creating something polished and staged. It is about creating something honest that will become a family heirloom.
Life Story Films in London, Across the UK and Beyond
Although my grandmother’s film was created in The Netherlands, I am based in London and travel across the UK & Europe to create Life Story Films and Personal Documentary Films for families.
Whether you’re in London, the South East, or further afield, I come to you, because home is often where the story lives.
