Family Films That Hold a Chapter of Your Life

Honest and heartfelt films for families who want to remember how life really felt

Family Films as Time Capsules

A photo can capture a moment, but a film captures far more. It holds sound, movement, and voice — the way your child laughs, how they run to you without thinking, the small gestures and habits that make your family uniquely yours. Family films aren’t just for kids. They’re also a way to capture grandparents and other older family members and hold onto their stories and life lessons.

I make family films that focus on people, relationships, and personality. Not performances. Not perfect days. Real life, carefully observed and thoughtfully shaped into a film that will still make sense — and still matter — years from now.

Life changes quickly, often without us noticing it has. Children grow, routines shift, relationships evolve. A family film becomes a way to transport you back.

Two Ways to Tell Your Family’s Story

Highlight Films (2–3 minutes)

Short, playful films capturing snippets of everyday family life. These films might include moments like: breakfast at the table drawing at the kitchen counter a walk to the park gardening together a birthday, first haircut, or quiet weekend ritual.

I may ask simple questions along the way, especially with older children, but there’s no script. The aim is to capture genuine interaction, voices, and energy — and turn them into a film that feels familiar and true. A personal record of this stage of life.

Life Story Films (10–15 minutes)

Longer, story-led films created to preserve a chapter of a life. These are slower, deeper films focused on one story, theme, or person — often grandparents, parents, or anyone wanting to leave something of themselves behind. Their voice. Their memories. Their humour. Their lessons. These films are often gifted, shared across generations, and treasured long into the future. A family legacy, told with care.

Who this is for?

You’re aware that this stage of life won’t last and you want to remember it properly
You care about people, relationships, and personality more than appearances
You want your children (and future generations) to understand what life felt like
You value honesty and emotion over polish and perfection
You want a film that recognises your life as meaningful, exactly the way it is

This isn’t for you if:

You want a highly staged or scripted film that is fast passed and very polished or if you want everyone perfectly posed and “on their best behaviour”

And that’s completely okay. Different approaches suit different families.

If this feels like you, let’s create something special together:

Let’s Tell Your Story!

What Working Together Is Like

1. You Reach Out

You get in touch to tell me you’re interested in a family film. From there, we’ll set up a call and I’ll send you a short questionnaire. This helps me understand who’s involved, what stage of life you’re in, and what you’d love this film to hold onto.

For Life Story films, this step is especially important — we take time to talk through the story you want to preserve and why it matters now.

2. We Spend Time Together

This is the filming itself. I spend time with your family as you live your life — no scripts, no posing, no pressure to “do it right”.

For Highlight Films, I quietly document everyday moments as they unfold.

For Life Story Films, filming usually happens over two days. Day one is focused on conversation and storytelling. The second day is for capturing daily life, details, and moments that reflect who this person is right now

You don’t need to entertain me or plan anything elaborate. We shape the session around what already matters to you.

3. The Edit

This is where everything comes together. Editing is slow, thoughtful work — shaping the film so it feels true to you and your relationships.

Highlight Films are ready within 6 weeks.
Life Story Films take around 12 weeks.

You’ll receive a finished film that feels true, considered, and deeply personal.

4. You See Your Story

You receive a finished film that holds a real chapter of your life — your people, your voices, your relationships.

Something you can revisit, share, gift, or keep private. A film that helps you recognise yourselves and say: this is us.

FAQs

Booking a photographer or filmmaker can bring up questions. Here are a few I’m often asked.

  • We’ll feel awkward — what if we don’t know what to do?

Almost everyone feels this way at first. You’re not expected to perform. I work quietly and guide only when needed. You will be busy with your family, each other, life happens and you’ll soon forget about being filmed.

  • What if our child doesn’t behave?

There’s no expectation of behaviour, and there is no ‘bad behaviour’ in my opinion. Sadness, anger, silliness, resistance, quiet — all of it is part of real family life and part of your story and personalities. It is often these moments that also show a lot of care, resilience, strength, and love.

  • When and where will our family film session take place?

Your session can take place wherever your life happens. This might be at home, outdoors, or a mix of both.

Filming starts from 4 hours, which usually gives us time to capture a variety of moments — inside and outside — without rushing

  • What if I need to cancel, I’m unwell, or the weather is bad?

Life happens. You can reschedule your session up to two times at no extra cost, as long as you let me know as soon as possible so I can free up the date for someone else.

If you’re unwell, postponing is absolutely fine — your health comes first. But it’s also possible to still film and show what life is like in these moments too.

If the weather isn’t ideal, we’ll decide together what works best. We can move indoors, use sheltered outdoor spaces, adapt creatively, or postpone if that feels right. Once I’m already on my way or at the location, cancellation is no longer possible.

  • What if the (grand)parent I gifted this to is not keen on being filmed?

This is very common, and completely understandable. Being filmed can feel awkward or intimidating at first.

My approach is documentary-based — there’s no posing, no performing, and no pressure to “say the right thing”. People are free to be themselves. Many of the most hesitant people I’ve worked with have ended up enjoying the experience far more than they expected — and loving the film even more.

  • What should we actually do during our filming session?

There’s no single right answer, because your session is shaped around what feels meaningful to your family.

That’s where the questionnaire and our call really help. Together, we think about moments, activities, conversations, and routines that reflect your family’s life and personalities.

    This might look like:

    • pancake breakfasts
    • forest walks with a teenager
    • baking a cake together
    • tickles, laughter, and quiet moments
    • reading a book before bedtime

For Life Story Films, we take a more structured approach. One day is spent capturing a sit-down conversation to tell their story. The second day focuses on moments that reflect their daily life and personality — reading the newspaper, writing letters, doing groceries, baking, walking in the park, or anything that feels true to them.
