Family Mini Sessions: What They Are, When to Book, and Whether They’re Right for Your Family

19/06/2026

You’ve seen the photos. A family laughing together in the kitchen, kids in pyjamas with messy hair, a parent and child curled up on the sofa with a book. And you’ve thought: I want that.

But maybe a full three-hour session feels like a big commitment right now, or you’re not sure your family needs that much time.

That’s exactly where a mini session comes in.

This post will give you a clear, honest picture of my family mini sessions in South-East London, so you can decide whether one feels right for your family.

What a Family Mini Session in South-East London Actually Looks Like

My mini sessions are one hour long and completely documentary in approach. That’s shorter than my usual three-hour documentary family sessions, but they’re made with the same thoughtful, unhurried approach.

That means nothing is posed, staged, or directed in a traditional sense. I’m not setting up shots or asking you to perform for the camera. Instead, I’m there to observe and document your family as you naturally are and create images that feel like your life.

Before your session, we’ll complete a short questionnaire and have a phone call so I can understand your family and how you already spend time together. From there, we choose one simple, real-life activity that already exists in your everyday life — something natural to you, not created for the camera.

There’s no pressure to behave differently because I’m there. I simply follow what unfolds.

A one-hour session is often enough to focus on one meaningful slice of family life, such as:

  • Slow mornings together at home
  • Breakfast in pyjamas
  • Reading together on the sofa
  • Playing or relaxing at home
  • A familiar outdoor walk or routine
  • Baking Christmas cookies or everyday household moments
  • Decorating the Christmas Tree

There’s no need to plan something impressive or particularly “photogenic.” The simplest moments are often the ones that carry the most meaning. What matters is that it feels like part of your real life – something that already belongs to you as a family.

Where Mini Sessions Take Place

My family mini sessions take place in South-East London only, within approximately one hour travel time from BR2 0SD by public transport.

This keeps the sessions local, relaxed, and rooted in real environments — often your home or a nearby outdoor location that fits the season and your family’s natural rhythm.

When I Offer Mini Sessions (and Why They’re Limited)

I offer mini sessions only a couple of times per year — typically once in spring or autumn, and once around Christmas.

This is intentional. I keep the number of slots small (usually around nine per round) so that each session gets the same care, attention and documentary approach I bring to every family I photograph. These aren’t a conveyor belt. They’re a considered offer, available at specific times.

This also means they’re not flexible in the way a private booking is. You’ll be choosing from set dates rather than picking a time that suits you. If you need more scheduling flexibility, a full session is likely the better fit.

Are Mini Sessions the Right Fit for Your Family?

This is the question worth sitting with honestly. Mini sessions work beautifully in some situations and less well in others. Here’s how I’d think about it:

A mini session might be a great fit if:

  • You love my photography, but a full three-hour session isn’t within your budget right now
  • You want to capture one specific, meaningful moment or routine
  • You’re happy choosing from set dates rather than a fully flexible booking
  • You’ve already done a full session with me and want to update your images or capture something new

A mini session is probably not the right fit if:

  • You want to capture lots of different activities or a real slice of your whole day
  • You need a lot of flexibility around dates and timing
  • You’re looking for a more open-ended and immersive experience

The honest version: if you want depth and range, the three-hour session is built for that. If you want one meaningful, well-captured moment in time, a mini session can do that beautifully.

What’s Included (and What to Know Before You Book)

Each family mini session includes:

  • A 1-hour documentary photography session
  • A private online gallery to view your images
  • 5 fully edited digital images
  • £25 print credit to use in your gallery store

One thing I want to be clear about before you reach out: mini sessions include a specific number of digital images and a print credit. They don’t automatically come with every image from the session.

If you fall in love with more images than your package includes, you can absolutely upgrade. But it’s worth knowing this upfront so there are no surprises.

I also want to say something about print credit, because it matters to me. Photos aren’t meant to stay buried in a folder on your phone. They deserve to be held, displayed, and passed down. The print credit included in your session is there to help make that happen – whether that’s a framed print on your wall or a small album you can reach for whenever you want to feel something.

What to Expect on the Day

One of the most common worries families have is what the session will feel like. The truth is: it’s simple, fun, and unforced.

I usually arrive and spend some time letting everyone settle. There’s no pressure for children to behave in a certain way or for anything to go perfectly.

You don’t need to pose or perform. You don’t even need to think about the camera, as you will be busy living your everyday moments as a family.

I’m simply there to document your family as you are — the real connection, the emotions, and everyone’s personality — making photos that will feel like home.

Why These Moments Are Worth Capturing

I started offering mini sessions because I believe you don’t need a perfect day, a tidy home, or a special occasion to deserve meaningful photographs of your family. Ordinary life is enough.

The messy kitchen, the unhurried Sunday morning, the game you play together every weekend – these are the moments and ordinary routines that, years from now, will mean everything.

A one-hour session, focused on something real and familiar, can hold an enormous amount of love and connection. That’s what I’m there to capture, and I want this to be accessible to more families.
