The Smile That Isn’t Really Yours
Have you ever looked at a photo of yourself and thought, “I don’t even recognise that person”? You’re smiling, but it feels… off. It’s the kind of photo where your mouth is doing one thing, but the rest of your face missed the memo.
If you’ve ever felt like that about your brand photos, you’re not alone.
As a branding photographer, I work with passionate, purpose-driven women and men who are deeply committed to what they do. Many of them come to me feeling nervous about being in front of the camera. They worry about looking stiff or awkward, or not looking “professional enough.” And somewhere along the way, they’ve been told that smiling is the key to looking approachable and trustworthy.
But here’s the thing: your most genuine, magnetic self has very little to do with holding a fixed smile.
Let me explain why I never ask clients to “just smile” and what I do instead.

Not Smiling Doesn’t Mean You’re Not Friendly
When we talk about personal branding, we’re really talking about personal storytelling. Your images should reflect who you truly are, not who you think you should be on camera.
And real stories include a full range of expressions and emotions. Confidence. Calm. Curiosity. Thoughtfulness. Even intensity, silliness or stillness. There’s power in all of it.
That’s why my approach is rooted in connection and comfort. I don’t aim for a polished performance. I aim for real presence.
Smiling because someone asked you to is rarely natural. And honestly, it often looks forced. Instead, I focus on creating an environment where you feel relaxed and supported enough to be yourself.
Because when you are, those genuine, easy smiles appear naturally, usually when you’re not trying to make them happen.

Your Brand Is Bigger Than One Expression
Here’s something that often gets overlooked in brand photography: you are more than one thing.
You might be warm and approachable and thoughtful. Calm and quietly powerful. Friendly and deeply focused. Your business has layers, and your brand photos should reflect that.
Having a variety of images with different expressions, moods, and energy gives you the flexibility to tell a fuller story. Not every moment you share online calls for a smile.
Maybe you’re:
- Sharing a reflective caption
- Talking about something meaningful or vulnerable
- Launching a new offer
- Writing about growth, boundaries, or purpose
- Positioning yourself as an expert or leader
A soft smile might not always suit that moment. Sometimes a serious, thoughtful, fierce, or calm expression communicates far more clearly.
Your brand photos should support what you’re saying, not contradict it. And that’s why I always encourage a mix — images that feel human, expressive, and real.

What I Do Instead of Saying “Smile”
I get to know you before we shoot
Every branding session I do starts with a conversation. We talk about your work, your values, what lights you up, and how you want to show up in your business. This allows me to tailor the session to reflect you — not a generic version of what a business owner is “supposed” to look like online.
Whether you’re a coach, artist, therapist, writer, or changemaker, your presence matters more than your poses.
I guide you with gentle prompts — never stiff poses
Instead of directing every inch of your body, I guide you into natural movement or connect you with an idea.
I might say:
- “Pick up something you love using in your work.”
- “Tell me what you’re proudest of lately.”
- “Sit how you’d actually sit in your studio.”
- “What would you say to someone who’s nervous to work with you?”
These small shifts help you move out of performance mode and into presence. They allow space for different expressions to show up — relaxed, focused, thoughtful, warm — whatever feels true in that moment.
I ask you questions you’ll want to answer
If you’re feeling nervous or self-conscious, we don’t power through it. We slow down.
I’ll often ask about something you’re genuinely excited or passionate about. Whether it’s the mission behind your work, a favourite creative tool, your family, a hobby, or something you’re building right now, talking about something meaningful naturally brings light into your body and face.
That’s when the real warmth happens. Not because I asked you to smile, but because you felt something real and actually had to laugh while we were chatting.

What You Really Want in Your Brand Photos
Ultimately, my clients don’t book me because they want traditional headshots with polished grins. They come to me because they want to feel seen.
They want to look at their photos and think:
“Yes, that’s me. That’s who I am, and that’s what I’m here to do.”
Your brand isn’t a carefully packaged version of you. It’s an invitation to others — one that starts with you showing up honestly, as yourself.
So if you don’t feel like smiling in your next session, that’s okay. You don’t have to. You’re allowed to show up thoughtful, calm, confident, serious, playful — or all of the above.
Because that’s where the magic is.
