Family Photographer in Blackheath

Natural, unposed photos of your family’s real life, in the place you call home.

Your Everyday Is Worth Celebrating

School runs, snack negotiations, bath time, the same bedtime story for the fifth night in a row. It might not feel like something to photograph, but this is your family’s story, and it’s full of good stuff. The little hand that reaches for yours. The way your kids crack each other up at dinner. The cuddle on the sofa when everyone’s worn out.

A documentary session gathers all of that up and keeps it safe for you. And it puts you in the pictures too, instead of always being the one behind the phone.

Years from now, you won’t remember these photos as “the day we had a photoshoot”. You’ll open them and be straight back on a windy afternoon on the heath, remembering who won the race to the pond and how everyone squeezed onto one sofa afterwards. That’s the magic of a photo time machine: it lets you go back and visit whenever you like.

Blackheath: Your Photos, Your Places

You don’t need a perfect backdrop. The best photos happen in the places your family already loves, because that’s where everyone relaxes. Blackheath has plenty of them:

  • The heath: flying kites, running through the long grass, big open skies
  • Blackheath Village: a hot chocolate at your favourite café, a wander past the shops, the walk home
  • The ponds and All Saints’ Church: a slow stroll, puddles, ducks and conkers in autumn
  • Your home: where everyday life happens and everyone feels most themselves

Not sure where to go? We’ll work it out together on our call. Most families find the answer comes quickly once they think about where they actually spend their weekends.

Is This for You?

You live in Blackheath or nearby, in Lee, Kidbrooke, Lewisham or Greenwich.
You'd love photos where your family looks like your family, not a catalogue.
You have a child who hates being told to smile, or a partner who'd rather be anywhere than in front of a camera. That's fine. Nobody has to pose or perform.
You're tired of being missing from your own family photos.
You want prints and albums you'll look at again and again, not files sitting on a hard drive.

Maybe Not for You If…

You'd like everyone matching, posed and looking at the camera at the same time. There are lovely photographers who do that really well. I photograph what happens instead.

Ready to document your family exactly as they are? I’d love to hear from you:

Let’s Tell Your Story!

We spent a very fun and relaxing morning together with Saskia whilst she made beautiful photos of our little family. She captured our 5-week-old baby exactly as she is: crying, feeding, milk drunk, sleeping. These are amazing memories of the early days together as a new family that we will cherish forever.

How It Works

1. Say Hello

Send me a message and we’ll have a relaxed chat to see if we’re a good fit. If you’d like to go ahead, I’ll send you a short questionnaire, and we’ll talk about what a normal day looks like for your family right now.

2. Your Session

I’ll spend around three hours with you, following your day as it unfolds. Within twenty minutes or so, most people forget I’m there. That’s when the giggles, the cuddles and the chaos start showing up in the photos.

3. Your Gallery

About four weeks later your gallery arrives as a slideshow set to music. Grab a cup of tea, sit down together and watch it. Then choose the collection that’s right for you.

I'm Saskia Albers, Your Blackheath Family Photographer

I’m a documentary family photographer and filmmaker based in Bromley, a short trip from Blackheath. I also photograph families in nearby Greenwich and across South-East London.

I’m a mum of two, so a toddler meltdown or a grumpy teenager doesn’t faze me at all. Those moments are part of your story too.

What I love most is how differently every family works. Some are loud and silly, some are quiet and cosy, and most are a bit of both before lunch. I never try to change that. I simply follow along and photograph your family the way it really is. You’ll get a mix of black-and-white and colour images, each one chosen to tell your story. And I hope that when your children are grown up, they’ll look at these photos and feel exactly how loved they were.

FAQs

Booking a photographer or filmmaker can bring up questions. Here are a few I’m often asked.

  • What if I need to cancel, or someone is unwell, or the weather is bad?

You can always reschedule your session up to two times at no extra cost, giving you flexibility if life gets in the way. Please let me know as soon as possible so I can free up your date for another family. However, once I’m already at the agreed location or on my way there, cancellation is no longer possible.

That said, with documentary photography, you don’t have to let illness or bad weather stop you. There’s still so much beauty to capture: the care you show for your child, the ways you support each other, and the little gestures or family rituals that reveal your bond. Jumping in puddles, running for cover, cosying up indoors. These honest, everyday moments can create heartfelt and timeless images. You can see an example of a session where we were caught in the rain here.

However, if you’d prefer everyone to be healthy and the weather to be good for the session, then it’s absolutely fine to postpone. Your family’s comfort comes first.

  • What if our home feels too small, too dark, or too untidy for photos?

Absolutely, I can still photograph there. Real homes are meant to be lived in. I don’t need large spaces or perfectly tidy rooms. I look for light, connection, and moments, not square footage.

Your home is an important part of your child’s story. It’s their safe space, the backdrop to their everyday memories, and the place where your routines and rituals unfold. Capturing it as it is now becomes part of what they’ll one day look back on and recognise as home.

  • How long is a family photo session?

Around three hours, and long enough for everyone to genuinely relax and be themselves. I will ask you to block out 4 hours in your diary to allow flexibility for unforeseen events and to give you a sense of not having somewhere else to be right after our photo session. This timeframe will truly give you a slice of your own life.

  • What if someone in our family is neurodivergent or finds cameras difficult?

Documentary photography is particularly well-suited to neurodivergent children and families. There’s no pressure to perform, no expectation to behave in a particular way. Sessions follow your child’s lead completely. Read more about how my documentary photo sessions will be the perfect fit: Neurodivergent Friendly Family Photography

  • Do you offer mini family photo sessions in South-East London?

Yes, once or twice a year, I run mini family photography sessions across South-East London, which are a great option if you’d like a shorter, more affordable session. I also offer Christmas mini sessions each December, which are perfect for capturing your family’s festive traditions honestly and naturally — no matching outfits required.

Spaces for both are limited and tend to go quickly. Signing up for my newsletter is the best way to hear about new dates first.

  • Can we do our family photos on Blackheath itself?

Yes. The heath, the Village and the ponds are all lovely for a session, and we can easily start at home and walk out from there. Any location is possible, though. The most meaningful one is usually somewhere your family already goes, like your local playground, a favourite café or grandma’s garden. If you’d like to include Greenwich Park, I’ll check whether a permit is needed and let you know beforehand. For more ideas, read how to choose the right location for your family photos.
