Some moments in life feel truly special—where excitement, joy and love come together in an unforgettable way. That’s exactly what happened when an 8-year-old boy had his wish granted by Make-A-Wish Foundation: to become a spy for a day.
As a photographer, I had the privilege of capturing this incredible experience—a fully immersive spy mission in London, complete with a tuxedo, spy gadgets, thrilling challenges, and even an Aston Martin ride. It was a day filled with adventure and happiness—not just for him but for his entire family.
A Day of Action-Packed Missions
The immersive COLAB Theatre team had designed an exciting spy adventure with different missions throughout the day. Some of the standout moments included:
- 🕵️♂️ Receiving his spy gadgets – The moment he geared up for his mission, including a special watch and a heat emitting glove.
- 💣 Stopping bombs from exploding – A thrilling challenge that put his problem-solving skills to the test.
- 💦 An epic water gun battle – A fun, action-packed finale where everyone got involved.
And of course, no spy adventure would be complete without a signature spy car. He rode next to a ‘professional agent’ in an Aston Martin, with his siblings in the back. The rest of us followed in a limousine as we travelled between mission locations.
I, as wel as the family, were completely blown away by the level of detail and the number of volunteers who came together to make this happen. All the credit here goes to COLAB Theatre for creating such an immersive spy experience.
A Family Immersed in the Experience
One of the most wonderful parts for me as the photographer was seeing how much his family embraced the mission. They weren’t just spectators—they were crawling on the floor, solving puzzles, riding go-karts, and memorizing secret dance moves. I also loved seeing the love between the family members, especially the bond between him and his older brother was really wondeful to witness. For a day, they weren’t thinking about hospitals or treatments—they were just together, having an adventure.
Capturing the Spy-Day Through Photography
From a photography perspective, it was a challenge—the lighting constantly changed, some locations were really dark, and the fast-paced action meant I had to be quick. But that’s what I love about documentary photography—capturing real moments as they unfold.
The most meaningful part? Knowing these images will always be there for them to remember this special day.
Having lost my dad when I was four, I understand how important photos can be. Helping families create and preserve memories, especially in difficult times, is something that brings me a lot of happiness. I feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed this mission of a lifetime and to have captured it for this amazing family.
If you ever have the chance to support Make-A-Wish, volunteer, or donate, I can promise you—it makes a difference.
Every family deserves to have their most precious moments preserved. Whether it’s a Make-A-Wish experience, a milestone celebration, or a day filled with love and laughter, I would be honored to document it for you.
