Family Photographer in Dulwich & East Dulwich

Honest, documentary family photography for families who want to be seen as they actually are.

You Deserve to Be in Your Family Photos Too

You’re in almost none of your own family photographs. You’re the one capturing everyone else. But one day, your children won’t just want pictures of themselves. They’ll want you in them. The way you looked when you were laughing at something they said. The way they fit perfectly under your arm when they were tired. The particular expression on your face — the one that shows up when everything is exactly as it should be.

A documentary session puts you back in the frame. Not posed, not performing, but present, in the middle of real life, exactly where you always were. These are the photographs your family will reach for first. Not the formal ones. The real ones.

And when you look back at these images in ten years, you won’t think about the day you had your photographs taken. You’ll think about that particular Sunday morning in Dulwich at home, on a wwalk, the café stop, the way everyone was. That’s the difference between a photoshoot and a documentary session. One gives you photographs. The other gives you the day back.

Dulwich — Start With What Already Feels Like Home

The best location for your family photographs isn’t necessarily the most beautiful one — it’s the most meaningful one. The park you always end up at. The café that became yours. The particular walk your children know by heart. These are the places that tell your story, and they’re worth a hundred generic photoshoots in a field.

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly what our pre-session conversation is for. Most families are surprised by how clear it becomes once they think about where they actually spend their time.

Some spots that work well for families in Dulwich:

  • Dulwich Park — the duck pond, the café, the hill
  • Peckham Rye Park — the wooded paths, open common and Japanese garden
  • Lordship Lane — the market, the independent cafés, the Saturday morning energy
  • Your home — where most of your family’s real life actually happens and everyone is comfortable.

Who this is for?

You live in or around Dulwich.
You want photographs that actually look like your family — the real, unpolished, completely themselves version.
You want everyone to be comfortable, especially the child who's shy, an introverted partner, or anyone who finds cameras difficult. A documentary session is built for exactly that. Nothing to perform, nobody to direct
You want to be in the pictures for once.
You want your children to look back one day and recognise not just how they looked, but how life actually felt.

This isn’t for you if:

You want everything controlled, directed, and perfectly lit. If you'd rather have a traditional portrait session, there are wonderful photographers who specialise in exactly that — I'm just not one of them.

If this feels like you, I’d love to hear from you:

Let’s Tell Your Story!

We had a photoshoot done by Saskia at Portray Your Story, and the photos turned out absolutely fantastic. They were a true reflection of our family life at that moment in time, natural, authentic, and full of feeling. She captured our everyday moments with such high quality and care. Receiving the printed photos was a beautiful added touch. We couldn’t be happier with the experience or the results.

What to Expect

1. You Reach Out

Send me a message and we’ll set up a no-pressure discovery call to make sure we’re the right fit. If you decide to go ahead, you’ll receive a short questionnaire so I can get to know your family a little better. We’ll then have another conversation about what everyday life looks like for your family right now — your routines, your rhythms, the things your children are into this month. That shapes everything naturally.

2. We Spend Time Together

On the day of your photoshoot, I will spend about 3 hours with you. Most families stop noticing the camera within the first twenty minutes, which is usually when the best images appear. The funny ones, the tender ones, the sibling squabble that dissolves into laughter, the sticky kiss that lands on your cheek at exactly the right moment.

3. You See Your Story

Four weeks after your session, your gallery arrives — presented as a slideshow set to music, so you can experience it the way it deserves. Find a quiet evening, sit down together, and press play. When you’ve taken it all in, you can choose the collection that feels right for you.

4. You Make It Yours

The images that matter most deserve to live somewhere more permanent than a hard drive. With your print credit, you choose how they exist in your home — framed on a wall, bound in an album, or given as a gift to someone who would treasure them.

I'm Saskia Albers, your Dulwich family photographer

I’m a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in nearby Bromley. I work with families across Dulwich, East Dulwich, Peckham Rye, and South-East London, who want honest, unposed photographs of their real life — made in a way that feels nothing like a traditional photoshoot.

My sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and built entirely around your family’s rhythm — not mine. Documentary family photography is how you hold onto the moments that pass faster than you expect.

I’m a mum of two myself. I know what real family life looks like, because I’m living it too. I’m never thrown by a crying baby, a reluctant teenager, or a toddler who refuses to cooperate — it all makes for better photographs anyway.

FAQs

Booking a photographer or filmmaker can bring up questions. Here are a few I’m often asked.

  • What if I need to cancel, or someone is unwell, or the weather is bad?

You can always reschedule your session up to two times at no extra cost, giving you flexibility if life gets in the way. Please let me know as soon as possible so I can free up your date for another family. However, once I’m already at the agreed location or on my way there, cancellation is no longer possible.

That said, with documentary photography, you don’t have to let illness or bad weather stop you. There’s still so much beauty to capture: the care you show for your child, the ways you support each other, and the little gestures or family rituals that reveal your bond. Jumping in puddles, running for cover, cosying up indoors. These honest, everyday moments can create heartfelt and timeless images. You can see an example of a session where we were caught in the rain here.

However, if you’d prefer everyone to be healthy and the weather to be good for the session, then it’s absolutely fine to postpone. Your family’s comfort comes first.

  • I’m worried that my home is too small/dark/messy for photos. Can you still take photographs in my home

Your home is where your life happens, and it’s a big part of your family’s story. I love photographing families in their own spaces because it’s where you feel comfortable and surrounded by memories and personal items. Small rooms, low light, or everyday clutter are absolutely no problem.  For more reasons why at-home sessions are amazing, check out my full article: At-Home Family Photo Session.

  • How long is a family photo session?

Around three hours, and long enough for everyone to genuinely relax and be themselves. I will ask you to block out 4 hours in your diary to allow flexibility for unforeseen events and to give you a sense of not having somewhere else to be right after our photo session. This timeframe will truly give you a slice of your own life.

  • Can we do part at home and part outside?

Absolutely, many families do exactly this. A typical session might start at home while everyone’s still in their morning rhythm, then head out to Dulwich Woods or wherever your family naturally gravitates. It gives the session a natural shape and a much wider variety of images.

  • Do you travel to Dulwich for photoshoots?

Yes, Dulwich and East Dulwich are covered regularly. Sessions are also available in nearby areas, such as Greenwich, Crystal Palace, Peckham, and across South-East London.

  • What if someone in our family is neurodivergent or finds cameras difficult?

Documentary photography is particularly well-suited to neurodivergent children and families. There’s no pressure to perform, no expectation to behave in a particular way. Sessions follow your child’s lead completely. Read more about how my documentary photo sessions will be the perfect fit: Neurodivergent Friendly Family Photography

  • Do you offer mini family photo sessions in South-East London?

Yes, once or twice a year, I run mini family photography sessions across South-East London, which are a great option if you’d like a shorter, more affordable session. I also offer Christmas mini sessions each December, which are perfect for capturing your family’s festive traditions honestly and naturally — no matching outfits required.
